Failure analysis of leakage on titanium tubes within heat exchangers in a nuclear power plant. Part I: Electrochemical corrosion

چکیده
Titanium tubes generally exhibit superior resistance against electrochemical corrosions amid seawater for their passive films TiO2. However, hydrogenassisted corrosion (HAC) is actually the Achilles’ heel to titaniummaterials when the temperature exceeds near 70 8C. In this event, severe degradations like quick thinning and leakage were frequently detected on a large number of titanium tubes exposed to natural seawater environment within heat exchangers in a nuclear power plant, which caused serious safety problems. This paper is the Part I of totally two parts conducted for the whole failure analysis study, mainly focusing on electrochemical aspect of failure causes and their behaviors. By means of over ten kinds of characterization methods, the analysis results identified that the HAC induced by the interaction effects between galvanic corrosion and crevice corrosion led to local bulges of the inner walls of some titanium tubes, and then the bulges were quickly thinned and eventually ruptured under the eddy erosion from the seawater containing sediment particles. Finally, relevant mechanisms were addressed in detail and prevention methods were proposed as well.

Corrosion Failure Study in an Oil Cooler Heat Exchanger in Marine Diesel Engine
In this article, the failure of a heat exchanger during its operation in the marine environment has been analyzed. This heat exchanger was used for cooling the oil in a marine diesel engine. Based on the existing failure history, damages in engine components were observed after 89 hours of engine working due to the leakage of the sea water to the oil. For the objective of the failure analysis, ...

In this study, the effect of the tube material on the thermal stress generated in a vertical shell and tube heat exchanger is investigated. Shell and tube heat exchangers are the most common heat exchangers used in industries. One of the most common failures in these exchangers in the industry is the tube failure at the junction of the tube to tubesheet. When the shell side and the tube side fl...
متن کاملFailure Probability and Remaining Life Assessment of Reheater Tubes
In this study, a real and significant industrial problem in a steam power plant was investigated. Reheater tubes in boilers are under the creep and the fireside corrosion mechanism that cause some of them to fail. Since the estimation of probability of failure (PoF) and remaining life (RL) is expensive and time consuming in the deterministic methods, in this work they were evaluated using struc...
